As it happened - Kolkata Knight Riders vs Delhi Capitals, IPL 2022

By Deivarayan Muthu and Hemant Brar

Capitals win by 44 runs

It was set up by a blazing 93-run opening partnership between Shaw and Warner. Pant, Thakur, and Axar all made charming cameos to swell Capitals' total to 215 for 5. Khaleel and Kuldeep then rattled KKR's chase, picking up seven wickets between them. Thakur, who had applied the finishing touches for Capitals with the bat, now closes out the game with the ball. Capitals romp to their second win in IPL 2022. This is KKR's second defeat this season.

Fifty and out

Shreyas dashes out of the crease and dumps Kuldeep over the wide long-on boundary to bring up a 32-ball half-century - his first for KKR. Kuldeep Yadav, though, immediately strikes back, having Shreyas stumped with a wrong'un. KKR are 118 for 4 in 13 overs. Their win probability has dropped to 3.33%. Only Russell can tear this up

Russell or nothing for KKR?

Pant matches up his offspinner Lalit Yadav with Rana and breaks the 69-run third-wicket stand. After wallopping a half-tracker over midwicket for six, Rana hauls a low full-toss to long-on. The asking rate for KKR is creeping towards 15.

Shreyas Iyer lays into Axar

Having seen off spells from Mustafizur and Khaleel, Shreyas gets stuck into Axar's left-arm fingerspin. It's not easy to charge at Axar, but Shreyas makes it look ridiculously easy by dashing out of the crease and launching him over his head for six - a genuine contender for the shot of the day. So far, Shreyas has taken 16 off nine balls from Axar. Nitish Rana is slowly easing himself in at the other end. It won't be too long before he takes on Axar and Kuldeep. KKR are 74 for 2 in nine overs. Their win probability has plummeted to 4.76%

Khaleel's double-strike

Left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed, picked ahead of Anrich Nortje, strikes in his first over, replacing Mustafizur. Venkatesh backs away, in a bid to manufacture swinging room, but Khaleel bowls into the pitch and chases the batter. Venkatesh can only flap a weak pull to deep square leg for 18 off 8 balls. In his next over, Khaleel has Rahane spooning a catch to Thakur running back from mid-on for 8 off 14 balls. KKR are 38 for 2 in the fifth over.

Action-packed first over

Mustafizur Rahman wins a caught-behind appeal first ball from umpire J Madanagopal, but Ajinkya Rahane calls for a review, with various replays indicating that the ball only brushed the top of the pad on its way to Pant. Mustafizur wins an lbw appeal second ball, but the original on-field out decision is reversed again; Rahane had eked out an inside-edged onto the pad this time. Rahane edged the third ball behind to Pant, but nobody appealed, with Pant gesticulating that he didn't hear any noise. Capitals' head coach Ricky Ponting can't believe what has just happened after watching the replay

Shardul, Axar provide final flourish

At one point, Axar was on 9 off 10, and Thakur on 3 off 3. Capitals were 176 for 5 after 18 overs and it looked like KKR might restrict them under 200 but then Thakur smashed two sixes, Axar a six and a four in a 23-run 19th over by Umesh Yadav. Shardul started the 20th over by smashing Cummins over mid-off for four and ended it by launching him over deep midwicket to propel DC to 215 for 5.
Thirty-nine runs came off the last two overs.

Shardul finished with 29* off 11, Axar with 22* off 14. At the toss, Shreyas had said we expected the pitch to get better in the second innings. But still, chasing down 216 will not be an easy task.

Still no Sarfaraz?!

KKR strike back, and how. After two Narine strikes, now Umesh removes Warner, who goes for the pull but holes out to deep midwicket. Rahane takes a smart catch there. But there is still no sign of Sarfaraz Khan - Shardul Thakur comes out to give company to Axar Patel.
In Capitals' previous game, Sarfaraz had made a handy 36 not out off 28 balls from No. 5. So it is a bit puzzling why he is still in the dugout with DC five down. Did he hurt himself after the match started? That's the only logical explanation I can think of at the moment. No, he is padded up and perhaps, perhaps will be next in, at No. 8.

Narine gets two

Five KKR bowlers have gone for ten or more in an over. One for eight an over. And here are Sunil Narine's figures: 4-0-21-2.
First he trapped Lalit Yadav lbw as the batter missed the slog sweep. Then Rovman Powell tried the same shot, and he ended up miscuing it miles in the air towards backward square leg, where substitute Rinku Singh settled under the swirler.
Warner is still there, unbeaten on 60 off 42. DC 162/4 after 16, 200 is the minimum they would want.

Fifty for Warner but Pant falls

Warner smashes Russell over the bowler's head. Venkatesh Iyer sprints from long-on, leaps, and gets his hand to the ball but fails to swat it back. That brings up Warner's fifty. But Russell gets some reward as Pant miscues a slash and holes out to third man. He falls for 27 off 14.

Warner, Pant take apart Varun

Today, even in the middle overs there is no respite for KKR. Everything is flying - ball, bat and Capitals. Pant unleashes a slog sweep followed by a falling reverse sweep, he loses the bat, against Varun. Then the bowler ends up bowling two successive no-balls. The first free hit goes for four byes, the next for a couple. Then Warner flays him over covers for four more. In all, 24 runs in the over.

Varun castles Shaw

Varun provides the breakthrough for KKR, castling Prithvi Shaw with a googly. Shaw played for the turn but the ball spun in and sneaked through the gap between bat and pad to dislodge the leg bail.
Pant walks in at No. 3, and brings up the team's hundred with a one-handed sweep to the fine-leg boundary.
Our Maruti Suzuki ASKcricinfo stat tells me that KKR have the best economy rate in the middle overs in IPL 2022. They could no doubt do with some of this control in today's game.

The Prithvi Theatre

Seven fours, two sixes and a fifty in just 27 balls - that's Prithvi Shaw for you. Here's Shiva Jayaraman telling us through numbers how dominant Shaw has been in the powerplay.
"David Warner tried to match Prithvi Shaw’s scoring rate in the powerplay today, but Shaw has towered over the rest of the Delhi Capitals batters in the first six overs this season. ]Shaw has scored 112 out of 197 runs made by the Capitals batters in the first six overs at a strike rate of 167.2. The rest of the batters have made 85 runs at 110.4. Plus, Shaw has been dismissed only once in the powerplay, the other batters five times."

Mystery unravelled

After seeing his seamers going for plenty, Shreyas turned to his mystery spinners - Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine. But Warner took them on. He slog-swept Varun from well outside off over deep midwicket before reverse-swatting Narine over short third man.
Shaw licked his lips when he got one down the leg side from Narine, and he put it away to the square leg boundary.
In our Maruti Suzuki ASKcricinfo stat, check out what Prithvi Shaw's strike rate is against Suni Narine in the IPL.

Umesh pings Shaw on helmet, DC 50/0 after four

Umesh realised there was not much seam or swing available, so he went short. He rushed Shaw with a bouncer but the batter managed to pull it behind square leg for four. Umesh went short once again on the next ball, Shaw attempted another pull but this time got pinged on the helmet. The ball flew to the third man boundary for four leg-byes. Umesh and a couple of KKR players check on Shaw if he is alright. He says he is. The physio is out to run a concussion test and all looks fine. Umesh then bowls a length ball on the pads and Shaw flicks it through midwicket.
From the other end, Warner welcomes Cummins with back-to-back fours through covers. Cummins goes around the wicket, something many bowlers do against Warner, especially in Test cricket. Warner looks to run down the length ball towards third man but ends up edging it too fine. Luckily for him, it doesn't carry to the keeper. Shaw then pulls the final ball of the over for a six to bring up DC's 50 in just four overs.

The Prithvi show

Prithvi Shaw was majestic for DC in their last game. And he continues from there, smashing Umesh Yadav for four on the first ball of the match. Three balls later, Umesh erred down the leg side and Shaw clipped for the four of the over. In the next over, he jumps down the track to Rasikh Salam and cuts him through covers. Warner joins him with a pulled four of his own on the last ball of the over.

KKR opt to bowl, Nortje misses out for DC

Shreyas Iyer raises his hand after the coin falls in his favour. KKR will bowl first. "It's a hard surface and has some grass, and I think it will get better in the second innings," Shreyas reasons. Pant says he doesn't mind batting first here.
KKR are unchanged. DC have Khaleel Ahmed coming in for Anrich Nortje.
Here are the XIs.

Former DC captain vs Current DC captain

There was a time, not very long ago, when Shreyas Iyer was Delhi Capitals' captain and Rishabh Pant was playing under him. Then came a time when Rishabh Pant was Delhi Capitals' captain and Shreyas Iyer was playing under him. And today, both men will lead their respective sides against each other as KKR take on DC at the Brabourne Stadium.
Iyer vs Pant is just one of the many subplots. There is David Warner vs Aaron Finch, the two openers who helped Australia to T20 World Cup glory a few months ago. Warner will also be against his Test captain, Pat Cummins.
